Job Description

Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated intern to support the development of high-temperature shape memory alloys fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The internship will focus on both materials development and additive manufacturing process development, with the objective of establishing suitable alloy compositions, processing conditions, microstructures, and functional properties for high-temperature applications.

The intern will work with researchers and engineers on alloy design, LPBF parameter optimization, sample fabrication, materials characterization, and performance evaluation. This position provides hands-on experience in metal additive manufacturing, advanced functional materials, and experimental research and development.

Key Responsibilities

Materials Development

  • Conduct literature reviews on high-temperature shape memory alloys, alloy design strategies, phase transformation behavior, and additive manufacturing.
  • Support the selection and development of candidate alloy compositions suitable for LPBF.
  • Investigate relationships among alloy composition, microstructure, transformation temperatures, mechanical properties, and shape memory performance.
  • Assist in the preparation, handling, and evaluation of metallic powders.
  • Characterize phase transformation behavior, microstructure, defects, and functional properties using appropriate experimental techniques.
  • Analyze experimental results and identify key factors controlling shape memory behavior and high-temperature performance.

LPBF Process Development

  • Support LPBF sample design, build preparation, machine setup, fabrication, and process monitoring.
  • Develop and optimize LPBF parameters, including laser power, scanning speed, hatch spacing, layer thickness, and scanning strategy.
  • Evaluate process stability, density, porosity, cracking, surface quality, and build repeatability.
  • Establish process–structure–property relationships for the selected alloy system.
  • Support the development of an LPBF processing window and recommended fabrication procedure.
  • Assist with data processing, statistical analysis, and design-of-experiments activities.

Candidate Requirements

  • Grade Point Average above 4.0
  • Mechanical / Materials Engineering knowledge
  • Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • A keen interest in advanced manufacturing, alloy development, and functional performance.
  • Willingness to work hands-on in a laboratory environment
  • Effective teamwork and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing processes is advantageous.

Learning Opportunities

Through this internship, the intern will develop practical knowledge and skills in:

  • Metal laser powder bed fusion
  • High-temperature shape memory alloy development
  • Alloy design and physical metallurgy
  • LPBF process optimization
  • Materials characterization and mechanical testing
  • Design of experiments and quantitative data analysis
  • Technical reporting and presentation
  • Research planning and problem-solving in an R&D environment
