In today’s rapidly evolving world, the only constant is change. To remain relevant and competitive, cultivate a mindset of continuous learning. Whether it's mastering a new software, obtaining a certification, or attending workshops, every learning opportunity enriches your skill set, broadens your horizons, and enhances your employability. Remember, knowledge is not just power; it's also a passport to unlocking new career avenues and possibilities.

In an interview with Lynn Ng, Assistant Chief Executive, Workforce Singapore, we explored the various initiatives Workforce Singapore spearheads to engage a diverse workforce.

We’re now entering an era in which most of us would not have just one career, does this mean that individuals would need to keep upskilling to prepare for multiple career changes during their working lives?

Fueled by the relentless pace of technological advancement and looming specter of economic uncertainty, traditional notions of job stability and lifelong careers have eroded, giving way to a dynamic and fluid employment landscape. This shifting paradigm poses both challenges and opportunities, reshaping the way individuals plan their careers marked by change and innovation.

The era of multiple careers is not merely a transformation in job patterns but a change in how individuals would like to pursue and progress in their professional journeys. It beckons individuals to adopt a proactive, adaptive and collaborative approach to career development, grounded in continuous learning, diversified skill acquisition and a willingness to embrace change. By doing so, individuals can navigate the complexities of the modern workplace, harness emerging opportunities, and carve out fulfilling and resilient career trajectories amidst changes in external factors that are beyond their control.

In addition, we need to redefine the meaning of career success. Rather than equating success with long-term tenure in a single role or company, individuals should now prioritise diverse experiences, skill development, personal growth and alignment with values and passions as hallmarks of a successful career trajectory.

What do you think are untapped or overlooked candidate pools that employers can draw upon?

Employers seeking to diversify their candidate pools and tap into often-overlooked manpower source can explore various avenues to foster inclusivity, leverage diverse perspectives and enrich their organisational culture. There are four candidate pools that employers can consider, highlighting their potential and contributions:

  • Senior workers: Having decades of experience in their respective fields, senior workers aged 50 and above are highly relevant and can continue to make significant contributions to the workplace through their experience, mentorship, problem-solving skills and knowledge transfer. This is especially in view of the government's plan to gradually raise retirement and re-employment ages to 65 and 70 years old, respectively, by 2030. Senior jobseekers aged 50 and above can tap the Employment Support for Seniors programme, administered by Centre for Seniors, to gain access to career advisory and job matching services.

  • Back-to-work women: Many women who have taken career breaks, whether for caregiving, pursuing further education, or other personal reasons, bring a wealth of experience, skills, and perspectives that can be invaluable to employers. All these qualities make back-to-work women productive and desirable employees; and they can also play important roles in building a healthy and collaborative workplace culture. Workforce Singapore has a ‘herCareer’ initiative to help companies find the most suitable talent and provide funding and training support so that women returning to work can transit smoothly into the organisation.

  • Persons with Disabilities (PwDs): PwDs can bring the needed skills and contribute meaningfully when organisations focus on their abilities and the job match is done right. Hiring them could also lead to a stronger culture and organisational performance. Having had to adapt and make adjustments to overcome various challenges in their lives, many of them have honed strong adaptability and resilience skills and offer unique viewpoints and creative problem-solving approaches, enriching discussions and driving innovative solutions within teams. Workforce Singapore has an Employment Support for PwD programme administered by SG Enable which provides subsidies, grants and employment facilitation services to help organisations hire and integrate PwDs into the workplace.

  • Ex-Offenders: Ex-offenders often demonstrate a strong resilience and determination to rebuild their lives, overcome challenges, and pursue positive pathways, inspiring colleagues and contributing to a culture of perseverance and growth within the organization. Through their experiences and personal growth journeys, ex-offenders also often develop a heightened sense of accountability, responsibility, and commitment to their roles, fostering reliability, trustworthiness, and a strong work ethic within teams. Administered by Yellow Ribbon Singapore, Workforce Singapore has an Employment Support for Ex-Offenders programme to help ex-offenders become job-ready and prepare them for re-integration into the workforce.
