What's it like to be an Assistant Accountant?
An Assistant Accountant performs basic bookkeeping, administrative and clerical tasks for a company. They usually work under the supervision of an Accountant or Accounting Manager and take on basic tasks to support them. They usually complete the day-to-day activities to help achieve the long-term goals of the accounting department.
Tasks and duties
- Creating and organising invoices, bills, receipts, payables and receivables.
- Answering inquiries and monitoring correspondences.
- Evaluating and correcting any errors in data entry.
- Conducting payroll and disbursing salaries.
- Running errands to the bank in order to verify payments.
- Reconciling income and expenditures on record.
- Executing miscellaneous tasks given by the accounting department.
Many Accountants start out in this role to gain accounting experience, before progressing to higher roles such as a Certified Public Accountant.
How to become an Assistant Accountant
A bachelor degree is usually required for this role. Accounting graduates may be preferred by some employers, but graduates of other fields may also be considered should they have sufficient mathematical and organisational skills to learn the ropes of accounting.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in accountancy, business administration, finance, or another related field.

Complete an internship in the accounting department of a recognised organisation.

After gaining experience as an Assistant Accountant, you could take the CPA, Singapore CA, or ACCA Qualification Exam for Accountants to progress your career.

Once you are a Certified Public Accountant, apply for higher positions such as Bookkeeper, Accountant, or Financial Manager.

Consider taking postgraduate studies in accounting, finance or business administration.
