What's it like to be a Business Analyst?
A Business Analyst provides a company with data-driven reports of business’ performance, in order to define metrics for growth and drive revenue. Business Analysts collect data from various sources, such as social media engagement, website traffic, and store revenue. They use this data to determine whether the business is succeeding or failing, and set metrics and solutions in order for the business to profit.
Tasks and duties
- Gathering, organising and analysing business data from various sources.
- Conducting market research to identify success factors and the latest trends.
- Defining and evaluating metrics for business profitability.
- Setting budgets for proposed business solutions.
- Presenting analysis reports and proposals to stakeholders.
- Creating graphs and models to communicate interpreted data.
How to become a Business Analyst
A bachelor degree is typically required for this role, although a certificate course in business analytics could also help you enter the industry. Apart from analytical skills, it is important for a Business Analyst to have good communication and presentation skills to help them translate their data findings to their clients and stakeholders.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in data analytics, business information systems, marketing or another related field. Degree holders in the field of business may be preferred by some hirers, although graduates of another field may enter the industry with a certificate course in business analytics.

Complete an internship in the business analysis department of a recognised company.

Develop proficiency in making graphs and presentations. Take opportunities in public speaking, such as a speech workshop or teaching, in order to practice communicating abstract data in an understandable way to a general audience.

Consider pursuing a masters degree in business analytics, or complete further education such as certification courses and seminars.
- 5.
Get promoted to higher positions such as Senior Business Analyst or Business Analyst Manager.
