What's it like to be a Civil Engineer?
Civil Engineers use their knowledge of mathematics, physics and engineering to design key infrastructure. They often oversee teams made up of subcontractors, clients, architects and other engineers. Civil Engineers typically have strong skills in project management and leadership, as well as technical competence. A typical working day for a Civil Engineer could include research and design work in an office, before travelling to a construction site to monitor the progress of a project.
Tasks and duties
- Undertaking feasibility studies.
- Developing detailed designs for infrastructure such as roads, buildings, airports and water systems.
- Designing for sustainability and assessing the environmental impacts of projects.
- Facilitating site inspections.
- Preparing project plans.
- Managing budgets and resources.
- Coordinating with architects and subcontractors.
How to become a Civil Engineer
Civil Engineers need a degree and must be board certified in order to practise in Singapore.

Complete a civil engineering degree with an education institution approved by the Professional Engineers Board (PEB).
- 2.
Gain four years of relevant practical experience in the civil engineering field.
- 3.
Pass the Professional Engineering Examination administered by the PEB.
- 4.
Obtain a practising certificate from the PEB.
