A Food and Beverage Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the operations of restaurants, bars and other establishments that serve food and drink. Their primary duties include scheduling staff shifts, ensuring excellent customer service, checking food and drink quality and managing inventory. It's a fast-paced role that often involves dealing with customers, staff and suppliers. Food and Beverage Supervisors work in a variety of settings, from fine dining restaurants and hotels to chain fast food outlets and catering companies. This career often requires a high degree of flexibility, as shifts can include evenings, weekends and holidays.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing and directing all food and beverage operations within an establishment.
- Ensuring compliance with food safety regulations and maintaining hygiene standards.
- Managing inventory and executing procurement of food and beverage supplies as needed.
- Handling customer complaints and queries effectively to maintain high levels of customer satisfaction.
- Training and supervising food and beverage staff to ensure high quality service delivery.
- Planning and organising rosters for staff, scheduling shifts and balancing workloads.
- Collaborating with the chef to plan menus, considering customer preferences and cost analysis.
How to become a Food and Beverage Supervisor
Many employers do not require a degree to become a Food and Beverage Supervisor. However, you must have enough experience in the food industry, particularly regarding hospitality management and food safety.
- 1.While a degree is not mandatory for many employers, studying Hospitality Management, Culinary Arts, or a related field could give you early exposure to the industry.
- 2.Depending on your role, you may need to get certified. Singapore requires F&B personnel to obtain a Basic Food Hygiene Certificate (BFHC) or equivalent certification.
- 3.Gain experience by taking on internships, voluntary roles, and entry-level positions. These will also polish the interpersonal skills expected of the role.
- 4.Also consider optional certifications and programmes, such as the WSQ Culinary Arts Certification or WSQ F&B Service Certification.
