Kitchen Assistants provide support to the kitchen staff of a food establishment. They are in charge of cleaning, moving kitchen objects around, and preparing ingredients using basic knife skills. They may also be found on cruise ships, and in hotels and institutional cafeterias.
Tasks and duties
- Keeping the kitchen clean and organised according to food safety protocols.
- Washing dishes and kitchen tools.
- Bringing in deliveries and storing kitchen inventory.
- Handling and processing raw food ingredients.
- Assisting kitchen crew with basic cooking functions such as slicing and boiling food.
How to become a Kitchen Assistant
University education is not a requirement to work as a Kitchen Assistant. Basic knife skills as well as knowledge of local sanitation standards are essential.
