What's it like to be a Legal Executive?
Legal Executives are found within the legal system and work on a variety of tasks similar to Solicitors. These may include providing legal advice, handling client casework, preparing documents and representing clients in court, tribunals or mediations. Legal Executives often specialise in a specific area of law such as family, property, criminal, civil litigation, personal injury or corporate. They can work in law firms, government departments, or corporate legal departments.
Tasks and duties
- Advising on and interpreting the law for the benefit of an organisation or individual clients.
- Drafting, reviewing and implementing legal documentation and contracts.
- Representing clients in negotiations, litigation and other legal proceedings.
- Overseeing legal and regulatory compliance within an organisation.
- Conducting in-depth legal research to provide advice on complex issues.
- Liaising with other professionals and stakeholders relevant to legal cases or issues.
- Aiding in the development of organisational policies and procedures to mitigate legal risk.
How to become a Legal Executive
A bachelor’s degree in law (LLB) or the equivalent is the first step to becoming a Legal Executive. You may get your legal education through certifications and a diploma, but some employers may prefer candidates who have passed the bar.
- 1.Build your legal knowledge with an undergraduate degree in law or the equivalent.
- 2.Gain relevant experience by working jobs in the legal field. You can be an intern, a legal assistant, or a paralegal.
- 3.Enhance your credentials with specialist diplomas or certificates in Legal Technology or Legal Studies.
- 4.Consider finishing a law degree and taking the bar to help you progress in this career path. Most employers prefer candidates who have been admitted to the bar in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
- 5.Build your network by joining professional associations like the Singapore Corporate Counsel Association (SCCA).
