What's it like to be a Pharmacy Technician?
A Pharmacy Technician’s primary duty is to help licensed Pharmacists with their daily activities. They may assist in organising medicines and health supplies, taking orders and facilitating transactions. Before dispensing medication to customers, Pharmacy Technicians need to have prescriptions and medicines verified by a Pharmacist.
Tasks and duties
- Processing orders, preparing medicines and distributing them to customers.
- Checking prescriptions and having orders cross-checked by a Pharmacist.
- Answering customer queries.
- Maintaining proper storage, labelling, organisation and supply of inventory.
- Ensuring the cleanliness and orderliness of a pharmacy.
- Supervising and training junior employees.
These healthcare professionals are also involved in the day-to-day operations of a pharmacy, including administrative tasks such as answering phone calls, arranging and keeping track of inventory and managing paperwork. They may work in a variety of health service environments, such as hospitals, clinics and pharmacies.
How to become a Pharmacy Technician
To become a Pharmacy Technician, you’ll need a combination of knowledge and skills gained through education and training.
Complete a pharmacy technician course certificate or diploma in pharmaceutical science. The Ministry of Health also offers certification for aspiring pharmacy support staff.
Gain experience. You could start off in an entry-level job such as Pharmacy Assistant and undertake on-the-job training.
After becoming an experienced Pharmacy Technician, consider completing an accredited degree in pharmacy to pursue roles as a Pharmacist.
