What's it like to be a Risk Manager?
Risk Managers identify and assess potential risks that could hinder the achievement of business objectives. Risk Managers often work within financial sectors, though their expertise can be of value to all types of industries, from healthcare to construction. This position necessitates excellent decision-making abilities, strong analytical skills, and a deep understanding of risk assessment and mitigation. The profession has a strong focus on compliance with regulatory standards and requirements.
Tasks and duties
- Identifying potential risks that could impact the financial or operational status of a company and advising on mitigation strategies.
- Developing and implementing risk management policies and standards to ensure organisational compliance.
- Conducting risk assessments to evaluate an organisation’s exposure to risk and assessing the effectiveness of controls.
- Continuously monitoring and reviewing risks and keeping up to date knowledge of regulations and industry best practices.
- Coordinating with various departments for risk management activities and reporting.
- Delivering risk analysis reports and presentations to communicate findings to management.
- Providing training sessions to the staff on risk management and cultivate a risk-aware culture within organisations.
How to become a Risk Manager
The degree you need to become a Risk Manager depends on the industry. For instance, study Finance or Economics to get into Financial Risk Management. Some employers may also require you to take special certifications.
- 1.Complete a bachelor’s degree in an industry-relevant field to give you proper foundations for the field.
- 2.Gather at least five years of experience in either risk management, financial analysis, auditing, compliance, or related fields. Start in entry-level positions and then work your way up.
- 3.Consider pursuing certifications like Financial Risk Manager (FRM), Certified Risk Manager (CRM), or Professional Risk Manager (PRM).
- 4.Explore opportunities for further study, such as a master’s degree, MBA, and training programmes.
