Security Managers lead a team of security officers and are in charge of an organisation’s safety. They may work for businesses, healthcare institutions, construction sites, warehouses, residential areas or certain events. Security Managers typically need strong communication skills. They need to think quickly as they may find themselves in situations where they need to act fast.
Tasks and duties
- Managing the overall operations of the security team.
- Drafting security policies and protocols and ensuring they are implemented.
- Investigating security concerns and providing solutions to mitigate them.
- Creating safety and emergency response plans.
- Conducting safety and security workshops for employees.
- Ensuring that safety and security equipment such as alarms are in working condition.
How to become a Security Manager
To become a Security manager, you usually need several years of industry experience. While there are no specific qualification requirements, relevant certifications can improve your employability.
Gain experience in your preferred field of security. You could start off as a Security Guard or Security Officer.
Consider completing certification courses. Some employers prefer mid-level or senior security staff to have certificates such as the Company Emergency Response Team (CERT) Certificate or the Security Officer licence from the Police Licensing and Regulatory Department (PLRD).
