What's it like to be a Zookeeper?
Zookeepers are responsible for the daily care and welfare of animals in a zoo. Their duties include feeding, cleaning enclosures, monitoring animal health, and sometimes assisting in public education and conservation efforts. Zookeepers work closely with a variety of animals, from mammals and birds to reptiles and amphibians, requiring a strong understanding of different species' needs. This career often necessitates early starts and outdoor work in all weather conditions. Typically employed by zoos, wildlife parks, and aquariums, Zookeepers may specialize in the care of specific types of animals.
Tasks and duties
- Feeding animals according to prescribed diets and feeding schedules.
- Monitoring animal health and behaviour, reporting any concerns to veterinary staff.
- Assisting in the management and conservation of animal populations, both in captivity and in the wild.
- Educating visitors about wildlife conservation and the natural habitats of the animals under care.
