What's it like to be a Counsellor?
Counsellors are professionals who listen to patients, develop treatment plans and create coping strategies. They actively help patients build coping mechanisms to guide them through stressful situations and provide direction and support. They often work in mental health facilities, hospitals and schools. Counsellors ask necessary questions to assess a patient’s condition and develop effective strategies to improve their lives.
Tasks and duties
- Assessing patients through detailed conversations, interviews and observations.
- Creating effective treatment plans and coping methods.
- Working with patients and developing goals.
- Discussing treatment plans with patients to identify improvements.
- Recording a patient’s progress and updating their treatment plan when needed.
How to become a Counsellor
To become a Counsellor you need a relevant qualification before registering with the Singapore Association for Counselling.

Complete a relevant bachelor degree, such as a Bachelor of Science in Psychology or Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

Apply for a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Psychology. This programme allows you to advance your professional qualification with authentic counselling experience. In this programme, you will experience practicum and supervision in which you will be dealing with real patients for you to gain experience and develop yourself further.

To practise as a Counsellor in Singapore, you must register with the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC). Your status as a Registered Counsellor has to be renewed every two years.
