What's it like to be a Dentist?
Dentists are healthcare professionals who diagnose and treat issues affecting the teeth, gums and mouth. They provide preventive care, education on oral hygiene, and procedures such as crowns, fillings and extractions. Some Dentists may choose to specialise in areas such as orthodontics, paediatric dentistry or oral surgery. Most dentists work in general dental practices, although they can also find employment in hospitals, education institutions or corporate dental service organisations.
Tasks and duties
- Examining patients' teeth and gums to diagnose and treat oral health issues.
- Performing routine procedures such as cleanings, extractions and fillings to maintain patients' oral hygiene.
- Interpreting dental x-rays and diagnostic tests to identify diseases and conditions.
- Creating treatment plans and advising patients on oral health care.
- Administering anaesthetics to keep patients from feeling pain during procedures.
- Using dental instruments, lasers and other technologies to perform dental procedures.
- Planning and executing corrective surgery on gums and supporting bones to treat gum diseases.
How to become a Dentist
To become a Dentist in Singapore, complete pre-university education, earn a bachelor's degree in Dentistry, pass the qualifying examination and obtain a license from the Singapore Dental Council (SDC) to be a practicing Dentist.
- 1.Complete pre-university education, such as GCE A-Levels or equivalent qualifications. Pursue a bachelor's degree in Dentistry, typically a program spanning about 5 years.
- 2.After completing your degree, pass the qualifying examination administered by the SDC.
- 3.Once you've successfully passed the qualifying examination, apply for a licence to practise dentistry in Singapore from the SDC. This licence is mandatory for practising as a dentist in the country.
- 4.Consider further specialisation or postgraduate training in areas like orthodontics or oral surgery to enhance your skills and expertise.
