What's it like to be a Design Manager?
A Design Manager collaborates with designers and other team members to oversee the design process in a variety of industries, such as construction, fashion, graphics and product design. Their responsibilities include coordinating the design team, setting project targets and establishing design guidelines. They often need to liaise with clients and stakeholders, offering design solutions and ensuring the final product meets the required specifications. As a management role, it frequently involves resource scheduling and budgeting. A Design Manager is typically creative, detail-oriented and has strong leadership and communication skills.
Tasks and duties
- Leading and directing design teams to ensure projects are completed to a high standard and within deadlines.
- Overseeing the development of design concepts, ensuring they align with brand aspirations and business objectives.
- Creating and implementing design strategies that escalate the overall quality of output and team productivity.
- Liaising with various stakeholders, such as clients, designers, and marketing teams to meet project expectations.
- Managing the design process from conceptualisation through to final result, including managing the budget and timeline.
- Keeping up to date with design trends and consumer preferences to inform the design strategy.
- Resolving any issues or challenges that may affect the quality of design or delay the project.
How to become a Design Manager
To become a Design Manager, start with a bachelor’s degree or diploma in a design-related field. A background in Business Studies can also give you an edge over other candidates.
- Complete a degree or diploma in Graphic Design, Architecture, Fine Arts, and other design studies. Studying Business as a minor may also expose you to the commercial impact of proper design.
- While not always mandatory, certifications may help propel your career forward. Some available certifications to aim for include Certified Design Manager, Certified Graphic Designer, or Certified Product Designer.
- A master’s degree may help you move on to more senior roles.
