What's it like to be a Project Engineer?
Project Engineers provide technical expertise to the management and execution of engineering projects. They plan, coordinate, and see projects to completion. They are responsible for the quality, efficiency, and profitability of the project and ensure that the project is completed on time and within budget. Project Engineers are usually found in government agencies, and architecture, construction, and manufacturing industries. They spend most hours on project sites liaising with other engineers and technicians.
Tasks and duties
- Determining project requirements.
- Putting together project teams.
- Obtaining materials needed for the project.
- Monitoring and maintaining standards and quality output.
- Liaising with contractors, stakeholders, and suppliers.
- Leading the implementation of safety processes.
- Identifying project issues and implementing corrective measures.
- Documenting and reporting the progress of the project.
How to become a Project Engineer
A bachelor degree and professional certification is required to work as a Project Engineer.

Complete a bachelor degree in engineering (mechanical, civil, or electrical).

Apply for registration as a Professional Engineer with the Singapore Professional Engineers Board. You will need to pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination and the Practice of Professional Engineering Examination. You will also be required to pass an interview. This will earn you a Practising Certificate.

Earn a Professional Management Professional (PMP) certificate. This is a globally-recognised qualification for project managers. To qualify, you will need sixty months of experience in project management, or a four-year degree with thirty-six months of project management experience within eight years.

You may choose to further your credentials by taking training courses on project management or leadership. Some Project Engineers also choose to take graduate courses.
- 5.
WIth more experience and expertise you can move up to Systems Engineer or Engineering Manager.
