What's it like to be a Desktop Engineer?
Desktop Engineers are responsible for an organisation’s technical systems, including the installation, testing, and maintenance of software. They also troubleshoot any hardware or software issues. Desktop Engineers may work either remotely or onsite, addressing user inquiries and analysing technical issues under a ticketing system. The job involves interaction with end-users and entails good problem-solving skills to deal with any computer or network-related problems.
Tasks and duties
- Providing remote and/or onsite end-user support for hardware and software issues.
- Troubleshooting reported problems.
- Installing required software.
- Conducting preventive maintenance and inventory on IT assets.
- Escalating issues when necessary.
- Ensuring compliance with IT policies with regard to data security.
How to become a Desktop Engineer
To become a Desktop Engineer, you need a bachelor degree in computer science, information technology or another related field.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in computer science or information technology.

Gain certification in CompTIA A+, CompTIA IT Fundamentals, or Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST).

Gain a few years’ worth of experience as a Support Technician, Trainee Engineer, or a similar role.
- 4.
After becoming a Desktop Engineer, consider progressing to a role such as Network Administrator, IT Director, or System Engineer.
