What's it like to be a Development Engineer?
Development Engineers conceptualise, design and optimise products or processes. They often work within research and development teams, using engineering principles to develop solutions that improve efficiency, quality and performance. The role typically includes collaborating with other engineers and stakeholders to identify problems, developing prototypes, running tests, and then fine-tuning designs based on the results. They operate in a wide range of industries, including manufacturing, technology and the automotive sector, among others. It's important for a Development Engineer to have a strong understanding of engineering principles, an innovation-led mindset, and the ability to work collaboratively with various teams.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting thorough research on current technological advancements and industry trends to develop innovative engineering solutions.
- Collaborating with product management teams to understand customer needs and convert them into functional product features.
- Designing, modelling and testing prototypes for products.
- Identifying potential challenges and limitations in product designs and creating alternative solutions to overcome these issues.
- Engaging in continuous product development, improvement and modification based on feedback and reviews.
- Ensuring that all engineering designs and products adhere to requisite industry standards and regulations.
- Documenting and presenting findings, proposals and project status updates to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
How to become a Development Engineer
To become a Development Engineer, you need an Engineering degree relevant to your industry. Practical experience and a continuous learning mindset will train you in all aspects of the role.
- Development Engineers typically study Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. Some employers may consider Physics or Materials Science majors.
- Gather as much experience as you can. Apart from internships and entry-level positions, join engineering clubs and competitions.
- Some Engineering degrees may require a Professional Engineer license. It requires at least four years of relevant experience. You must also pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FEE) and Practice of Professional Engineering Examination (PPE).
- Consider joining the Institution of Engineers Singapore (IES) to build your network and stay updated on industry developments.
