What's it like to be an Electrical Engineer?
Electrical Engineers design electrical systems for many industries including telecommunications, IT, energy, motor and construction. They are responsible for testing the systems for safety and efficiency, and applying the principles of mathematics, physics and electromagnetism to create systems that transmit electricity.
Tasks and duties
- Designing electrical systems containing electrical components and equipment.
- Interpreting client needs and customer requirements for electrical systems.
- Testing, monitoring and updating electrical systems.
- Overseeing production teams manufacturing electrical equipment.
- Troubleshooting problems with electrical systems.
How to become an Electrical Engineer
A degree in engineering, previous work experience and registration with the Professional Engineers Board are required for this role. Excellent maths and science skills, as well as knowledge of relevant software, can be advantageous for aspiring Electrical Engineers.
Complete a bachelor degree in electrical engineering or a related field.
Gain experience by undertaking an internship with an engineering company.
Register with the Professional Engineers Board. Applicants must pass the oral and written examinations in the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FEE) and Practice of Professional Engineering Examination (PPE).
Consider specialising in an electrical engineering field of interest, such as computer engineering, robotics or aerospace engineering. A postgraduate degree can give you the opportunity to develop advanced skills in these specialised areas.
