What's it like to be an Editor?
Editors review writing before it’s published to ensure it’s grammatically correct, accurate and appealing to readers. They are experts in written language with strong attention to detail in order to spot and correct errors. Editors work for publishing houses, websites, magazines and other institutions that publish written work.
Tasks and duties
- Evaluating written work to correct grammar errors and inaccuracies.
- Providing revisions and suggesting edits.
- Communicating publication standards to writers.
- Recommending titles, styling and formatting.
- Identifying and preventing copyright infringements and legal risks in written pieces.
How to become an Editor
A bachelor degree and excellent language skills are necessary for this role.
Complete a bachelor degree in english, journalism, communication or a related field.
Undergo an internship in the editorial department of a publishing, online content or academic company.
Create a portfolio by taking project-based editorial jobs for multiple publications. Having a portfolio allows you to showcase your work to future employers.
After gaining experience as an Editor, you can pursue higher positions such as Managing Editor or Editor-in-Chief.
