What's it like to be an Electrical Technician?
Electrical Technicians can be found in a variety of industries, including the manufacturing, power generation and automotive sectors. Their main responsibility is to install, maintain and repair electrical systems and devices. Under the supervision of Electrical Engineers, these professionals help to develop and test electrical equipment and systems, ensuring they are working efficiently and safely. Tasks and duties
- Installing, maintaining and repairing electrical systems and equipment.
- Analysing and interpreting electrical drawings and specifications to ensure accuracy in project delivery.
- Testing electrical systems and continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures to identify repair needs.
- Interacting with clients and contractors to review project needs and identify solutions to technical issues.
- Using a range of tools and engineering techniques to maintain and repair electrical systems to approved standards.
- Monitoring inventory of electrical supplies and ordering parts as needed.
- Following all health and safety regulations for safe working conditions in all areas.
How to become an Electrical Technician
Focus on obtaining a license from the Energy Market Authority (EMA) to practice as a licensed Electric Technician, in addition to gaining hands-on experience.
- 1.Obtain a diploma majoring in electrical power engineering or a related field, or equivalent qualifications recognized by the EMA.
- 2.Gain practical experience ranging from 1 to 5 years, which qualifies for various pathways to become a licensed electric technician.
- 3.
Apply for an Electrical Technician license at the official EMA website through one of the following pathways:
- For Diploma Holders with 1 year of experience: Complete the EN033 Licensed Electrical Technician Preparatory programme conducted by the Singapore Institute of Power and Gas.
- For Diploma Holders with 2 years of experience: No additional prescribed course required.
- For Practising Licensed Electricians with 5 years of experience: Complete the EN033 Licensed Electrical Technician Preparatory programme.
- 4.Stay updated with industry standards and regulations by participating in relevant training programs and continuing education courses.
