What's it like to be a Facilities Manager?
Facilities Managers are critical to the care and maintenance of buildings and grounds. They exercise operational control, and schedule and supervise repair or preventive work, cleaning, and renovations. They are also responsible for coordinating the use of the facility, especially for special events.
Tasks and duties
- Inspecting facilities and grounds.
- Preparing damage reports.
- Coordinating with administration on the use of the facilities.
- Scheduling upkeep, renovation, and repairs.
- Hiring, overseeing, and managing cleaners, groundskeepers, and parking crews.
- Hiring third-party repair and renovation crews.
- Overseeing the installation of new facilities or amenities.
- Preparing budgets and budget reports.
- Maintaining records of payments and contracts.
- Ensuring compliance with building codes and safety regulations.
Facilities Managers strive to provide a safe, clean, and productive environment for the occupants or users of the property. They usually have a good understanding of building construction, heating and cooling systems, security, as well as land ownership regulations and building permits. They are usually found in government, education, hospitality, and real estate industries.
How to become a Facilities Manager
Experience is usually preferred over formal education, but aspiring Facilities Managers need to have at least a high school diploma.

Complete secondary school education.

Complete a bachelor degree in facility management, engineering (civil, electrical, or mechanical), or business administration. Some companies are willing to hire high school graduates but having an advanced degree can increase your employability.

Gain experience in general maintenance. This includes repairs and renovations, landscaping and grounds maintenance, and electrical engineering.

With sufficient experience in a leadership role, you can be promoted to Facilities Manager.

Consider earning additional certification like the Facility Management Professional (FMP) given by the International Facility Management Association.
