What's it like to be a Healthcare Assistant?
Healthcare Assistants are responsible for the welfare of patients in various healthcare settings such as hospitals, clinics and residential care homes. Common responsibilities include offering physical and emotional support to patients, performing health checks, assisting in personal care activities and updating patient records. Healthcare Assistants work closely with medical professionals like nurses and doctors to provide the best possible care. They need to have good communication skills and a caring nature. Some Healthcare Assistants choose to specialise in areas like mental health or paediatrics.
Tasks and duties
- Supporting patients with basic personal care tasks such as feeding, bathing toileting and mobility.
- Monitoring patients' health by regularly taking temperatures, blood pressures and pulse rates and recording the results.
- Assisting with clinical duties such as simple wound dressings, taking blood samples and managing infection control.
- Communicating effectively with the healthcare team and patients, and reporting on any changes or concerns regarding the patient's condition.
- Keeping patient records up to date by documenting care provided, observation results and any abnormalities or changes in condition.
- Providing practical support and reassurance to patients and their families with compassion and patience.
- Maintaining a clean and safe environment adhering to health and safety guidelines.
