What's it like to be a Housekeeper?
A Housekeeper’s main responsibility is to maintain the cleanliness of a residential home or commercial space in an organised manner. The job requires the use of cleaning tools such as vacuum cleaners, mops, dust blowers and other appliances. Housekeepers may be employed by private individuals or by a cleaning company to work in a crew that services commercial establishments.
Tasks and duties
- Maintaining an orderly residence or commercial space.
- Keeping the work area or living space clean and organised.
- Providing reports on current inventory of cleaning materials, food stock, and other relevant household or office items.
- Servicing employers on domestic work which includes cooking, caregiving for children and the elderly, and other tasks defined by the Singaporean Ministry of Manpower.
According to Singapore law, specific duties outside of domestic work such as gardening, repair work, car washing are not allowed to be performed by Housekeepers.
How to become a Housekeeper
You don’t need any formal education to work as a Housekeeper. However, most employers prefer candidates to at least have completed GCE-level studies, especially when getting hired by a cleaning company.

Study a systematic, efficient way of cleaning. You can start practising a routine by shadowing others and practising in your own space.

Learn how to use cleaning equipment and materials. Some employers, mostly cleaning companies, may train you to use specialised equipment.
- 3.
Take advanced certification courses in housekeeping. Depending on the employer, having a certification significantly increases your chances of being hired in commercial establishments such as hotels.

Practice being able to communicate with your employers. Being able to also speak Chinese, Malay, or Tamil can put you at an advantage when you are seeking employment in Singapore.
