Laboratory Technicians provide support to scientists and medical professionals in analysing, recording, and reporting laboratory tests. They are responsible for organising specimens, sterilising laboratory equipment, and keeping facilities sanitised. They work in diagnostic centres, hospitals, geology, biology, and chemistry laboratories.
Tasks and duties
- Performing laboratory tests under instruction of medical professionals and scientists.
- Preparing specimens and equipment for laboratory tests.
- Recording and analysing test results.
- Keeping inventory of specimens, replenishing supplies when necessary.
- Receiving and organising deliveries.
- Sterilising laboratory equipment and sanitising laboratory.
How to become a Laboratory Technician
Bachelor degree holders in the sciences are preferred by some companies looking to hire Laboratory Technicians, although graduates from another field may qualify should they have relevant laboratory experience.
Graduate with a bachelor degree in medical technology, biology, chemistry, or another similar field.
Complete an internship at a laboratory.
Apply as a Laboratory Assistant to gain 1-2 years of experience before securing a role as a Laboratory Technician.
Progress to higher positions such as Laboratory Supervisor or Laboratory Manager.
Consider postgraduate education in biochemistry, geology, biomedical engineering or another specialised field.
