What's it like to be a Production Supervisor?
A Production Supervisor oversees and manages the operations in manufacturing and production settings. They aim to meet productivity targets, maintain product quality and adhere to safety standards. They often coordinate daily work schedules, monitor the production process, and solve any problems that arise. Production Supervisors typically work in several sectors ranging from the food industry to mechanical goods or clothing manufacturers, and they also liaise with other teams such as human resources, product control and maintenance. They play a paramount role in ensuring efficient production processes, reducing waste and downtime, and helping to achieve a company's bottom-line goals.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing the practical implementation of production processes and strategies.
- Managing, directing and coordinating the work of production staff and line operatives.
- Ensuring that effective production methods are achieved, maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Contributing to the planning and organisation of production schedules to meet delivery deadlines.
- Checking and optimising production output according to specifications and resolving any issues or delays.
- Analysing production data to identify and implement improvements in efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
- Maintaining open communication lines with other departments, such as procurement and quality assurance.
How to become a Production Supervisor
The requirements to become a Production Supervisor depend on the industry. While some organisations are okay with diploma in a related field, many employers prefer candidates with a Bachelor’s Degree in either Manufacturing, Engineering, or a related field.
- 1.Complete a degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, or a related field to get an edge over other candidates.
- 2.Gather work experience of at least two years. Start with entry-level roles in Manufacturing or Production. You can also take an internship or participate in on-the-job training.
- 3.You may need other job-specific training. For example, Singapore’s WSQ (Workforce Skills Qualifications) has fire, food, and health safety programmes, which could benefit you if you work in a company that deals with them.
- 4.You can also apply for professional certifications. Being a Certified Production Technician (CPT) or Certified Manufacturing Technologist (CMfgT) or having a Lean Six Sigma Certification can boost your credentials.
