What's it like to be a Lawyer?
Lawyers provide advice, guidance and representation to individuals, businesses and government bodies. Their job may involve a range of functions including researching case laws, preparing legal documents, representing clients in court, negotiation or mediation situations. - Soliciting services to potential clients, like individuals or businesses.
- Managing legal, regulatory and business risk.
How to become a Lawyer
Becoming a Lawyer in Singapore involves completing a law degree, passing the Bar Exam, and undergoing supervised legal training, with recognition possible for certain foreign degrees.
- 1.Obtain a 4-year Bachelor of Law course from National University of Singapore (NUS) or Singapore Management University (SMU) and and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) or complete a JD post-graduate program from SMU, with a required GPA or class honours.
- 2.Foreign law degrees from select universities in Australia, New Zealand, the United States (US), and the United Kingdom (UK) may be recognized with specific academic requirements. Refer to the full list is on the Singapore Institute of Legal Education (SILE) website.
- 3.Pass the Bar Exam, which includes Part A and Part B components, involving coursework, supervised legal practice, and examinations. Part B is offered at Singapore Institute of Legal Education and requires completion of 7 courses over a 5-month period.
- 4.Additionally, candidates must undergo a supervised practice legal training period of 6 months to qualify as an advocate or solicitor.
