What's it like to be a Lecturer?
A Lecturer is a university-level educator that gives lectures based on their subject matter expertise. They typically have a flexible schedule that revolves around class/training hours and doing administrative work in an office setting. They may work in a part-time or full-time capacity for colleges, universities, or at events.
Tasks and duties
- Developing learning modules.
- Preparing teaching materials.
- Conducting classes in a face-to-face, virtual, or hybrid capacity.
- Tracking and evaluating student attendance and performance.
- Grading exams, quizzes, papers, and other projects.
- Mentoring students on career-related matters.
A Lecturer is different from a Teacher as a Teacher handles students at the primary and secondary level, while a Lecturer primarily teaches college or university students.
How to become a Lecturer
To work as a Lecturer, formal education is required.
- 1.
Graduate with a degree in education or in a specific field of your choice.
- 2.
Depending on the subject to be taught, certain colleges and universities may require a relevant masters degree, post-graduate diploma, professional degree, or a PhD.
- 3.
Consider completing an Advanced Certificate in Training and Assessment (ACTA), an Advanced Certificate in Learning and Performance (ACLP), or any other education programme under Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) as these may be advantageous.
- 4.
Master relevant programmes or software, if any, or any applicable professional certification.
- 5.
Gain at least five years’ worth of experience in the training industry or in Higher Education.
- 6.
Progress to a role such as a Senior Lecturer or Head of School.
