What's it like to be a Machine Operator?
A Machine Operator is a trained professional who operates, maintains and repairs a variety of heavy machinery and equipment. Duties may include checking the machinery is set up properly, performing regular maintenance and basic repairs, and producing parts from raw materials. Machine Operators are often employed in manufacturing or production environments across a range of industries, such as automotive, food production and electronics among others.
Tasks and duties
- Setting up and adjusting machines and equipment according to manufacturing procedures.
- Monitoring and operating machines to ensure they meet production and quality requirements.
- Performing regular maintenance on machines so they function safely.
- Inspecting and measuring finished products, and comparing them with requirements to detect any defects.
- Using gauges, calipers, micrometers, or other types of measurement tools to inspect parts for compliance with quality standards.
- Documenting machinery information, including operation times, problems and solutions, materials used and production output.
- Adhering to safety regulations and procedures, including wearing appropriate safety gear and reporting incidents.
How to become a Machine Operator
To become a Machine Operator, you need vocational training and practical experience. You may also require special licenses depending on the machinery you’re using.
- 1.You need at least a GCE N-Level to become a Machine Operator. Consider enrolling in NITEC courses in Mechanical Technology, Precision Engineering, Mechatronics, or Mechanical Engineering.
- 2.Participate in your employer’s on-the-job training to learn the ropes of the organisation.
- 3.Depending on your work, you may need Workplace Safety and Health Certifications like Apply Workplace Safety and Health, Operate Forklift, Perform Metal Machining Operations, or Operate Basic Industrial Robots.
- 4.Try to join professional associations, such as the Singapore Manufacturing Federation, to broaden your network and access more training.
