What's it like to be a Nurse?
Nurses are healthcare professionals that look after patients, support doctors during surgeries and emergency procedures, administer basic medicines and handle patient records. Nurses work in hospitals, clinics and nursing homes, and some are even hired to work inside family homes or hospices for elderly patients. Just like doctors, Nurses can go on to have specialisations. Some Nurses develop expertise as neonatal nurses, emergency room nurses and critical care nurses.
Tasks and duties
- Assisting doctors, healthcare specialists and surgeons.
- Treating patients in medical emergencies.
- Observing patient symptoms.
- Reporting on patient progress to doctors.
- Recording all patient medicines, procedures and tests.
- Preparing patients for medical examinations.
- Administering routine diagnostic checks such as pulse, blood pressure and temperature checks.
- Administering medicine and injections.
- Communicating with patients and families.
How to become a Nurse
Nursing is a regulated profession in Singapore, and all registered Nurses will need to obtain a licence to practise.
- 1.
Complete a Diploma in Nursing or Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
- 2.
Pass the Singapore Nursing Board Licensure Examination to register to the SNB.
- 3.
Obtain an SNB Practising Certificate to become a registered Nurse in Singapore. This certificate will need to be renewed every year for a small fee.
- 4.
After gaining experience as a Nurse, consider further study to pursue a specialisation such as neonatal or critical care nursing.
