What's it like to be a Physician?
A Physician, commonly referred to as a Doctor, provides healthcare to patients in a variety of settings like hospitals, private clinics and community health centres. They perform examinations, diagnose illnesses, and develop treatment plans tailored to each patient's condition. A Physician might also provide preventative care advice to promote overall wellbeing. There are many specialisations within the field of medicine, such as paediatrics, cardiology, neurology and others, which require additional years of training.
Tasks and duties
- Examining patients to assess their physical health and diagnose illnesses or injuries.
- Performing medical procedures and treatments based on the individual health needs of patients.
- Providing advice on preventative health care, diet and lifestyle choices to promote overall health.
- Prescribing and administering medications and therapies in accordance with patient's conditions and responses.
- Collaborating with other healthcare professionals, like Nurses, Therapists and Physicians, to discuss care plans and treatment options.
- Contributing to medical research studies by staying up to date with the latest discoveries and treatments in the field.
- Maintaining records of patient medical histories, diagnoses, treatments and other essential health information.
How to become a Physician
No degree is specific to Medicine. However, most future physicians study Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or other science courses. What’s important is that your degree programme includes pre-medical coursework. After undergrad, you must complete a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent degree.
- 1.Medical degrees are competitive in Singapore. Get top marks from your secondary education to your undergraduate studies to med school. Science degrees are preferred as universities require certain grades for specific science subjects.
- 2.Complete a one-year housemanship programme in an accredited hospital. You also need to finish three to five years of residency.
- 3.Pass the licensing examinations administered by the Singapore Medical Council.
- 4.Participate in continuing medical education activities to maintain your licensure. The SMC requires physicians to attend conferences, workshops, seminars, and other educational activities.
- 5.Consider specialising and pursuing fellowships to deepen your knowledge. Some subspecialties may require different certifications.
