What's it like to be a Quantity Surveyor?
Quantity Surveyors are responsible for identifying the needs of a construction project. They chart out timelines and ensure that everything runs according to schedule and the allotted budget. Quantity Surveyors implement Cost Value Reconciliation (CVR) and risk assessments to make sure that the project is safe and affordable.
Tasks and duties
- Doing a thorough review of blueprints and construction plans.
- Preparing the quantity requirements.
- Creating reports, analyses, contracts, budgets, and other related documents.
- Liaising with clients and other professionals like Site Managers, Project Managers, and Site Engineers.
- Readying labour and supplier accounts for payment.
- Making negotiations regarding labour contracts and timelines.
- Checking inventory and ordering more materials whenever needed.
Quantity Surveyors provide cost and material estimates to maximise time management. They also work on the design aspects of a construction project.
How to become a Quantity Surveyor
You need to have a formal educational background to be able to excel in this role. Since you will be handling major aspects of a construction project, experience is also important.
Complete a bachelor degree in construction management. This degree will equip you with analytical and communication skills that are necessary to orchestrate and estimate costs for construction projects.
Get an internship or find an entry-level position. Experience is important when becoming a Quantity Surveyor, and you can start by being an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Surveying Technician, or Surveying Assistant.
Look for employment opportunities on various construction sites and work your way up to become a Quantity Surveyor.
