What's it like to be a Safety Officer?
Safety Officers are on-site employees that monitor a workplace for health and safety concerns, and enforce policies that reduce the risk of accidents and incidents. Besides supervising safety on a work site, Safety Officers also conduct training and provide updates that may affect the health and safety of employees. In addition, they also employ tests and drills to ensure compliance of on-site policies. This role is regulated by the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Regulations under the Singaporean Ministry of Manpower (MoM).
Tasks and duties
- Monitoring a workplace for the health and safety of the workforce.
- Enforcing workplace policies that affect health and safety of employees on-site.
- Conducting health and safety employee training onsite.
- Assessing current health and safety policies at the workplace and suggesting improvements.
- Providing reports on the state of health and safety compliance by the workforce.
How to become a Safety Officer
To start a career as a Safety Officer, you must have a qualifying bachelor degree.

Complete a recognised diploma course or bachelor degree related to environmental and occupational health and safety. Completing this course of study can take up to two to four years of education.

Register as a Workplace Safety and Health Officer with Singapore's Ministry of Manpower.
- 3.
If you decide to work in a specific industry that may be technical, chemical, or engineering-related, specific industry certifications such as chemical handling and site safety may be required by an employer.

To advance in this role, taking up industry-specific studies in environmental, chemical, or civil engineering could help to increase your chances in getting more senior leadership roles.
