What's it like to be a Sous Chef?
A Sous Chef commonly works long hours in the kitchen and must deliver high-quality dishes. They act as the lead in the absence of the Head or Executive Chef, acting as second in command in kitchen operations. They can work in a variety of settings, from companies, cruise ships, hotels, resorts, and restaurants.
Tasks and duties
- Helping with daily kitchen operations.

- Ensuring food is properly prepared and presented.
- Producing high-quality dishes.
- Training and supervising new kitchen staff.
- Procuring and monitoring inventory of supplies.
- Operating kitchen equipment and monitoring for any issues or malfunction.
- Maintaining a kitchen’s cleanliness and orderliness.
How to become a Sous Chef
You usually need extensive industry experience to work as a Sous Chef. Formal education may be required.

Consider completing a diploma or degree in culinary arts or another culinary-related field.

Alternatively, build relevant experience by working in the industry. You could start out in junior positions in a kitchen and work your way up.

Gain at least two to six years’ worth of experience working in kitchens and in staff management. Certain companies may require hotel experience or Halal certification.
