Ground-‐Up Initiative (GUI) [pronounced Gee-‐U-‐Aye] is a volunteer-‐driven, non-‐profit community that seeks to restore the connection between urbanites and the land for the many universal values and life skills it teaches us. As more than half the world’s population live in cites, it is becoming more important than ever to keep our basic connection with the land alive. To bridge this growing disconnect, GUI has been shaping a Sustainable Living Kampung (SL Kampung) in Kampung Kampus ( the formal Bottle Tree Park). The beautiful connections forged among GUI members and volunteers are woven by a diversity of actvities — organic farming, appropriate technologies, arts and culture, social and humanitarian projects. These have rekindled the down-‐to-‐earth Kampung Culture once familiar in this region. GUI’s 21st Century Kampung Culture of harvesting the best of values and what modern life has to offer is the foundation from which it creates solutions for a sustainable future. We registered ourselves with Registry of Societies on the 22 Apr, 2008 and received approval on the 8 May 2008.GUI now forges ahead to build Kampung Kampus (KK), which represents a 260-times growth of GUI’s initial plot of land. This expansion will enable GUI to reach out to a wider audience in Singapore and the region. This community learning campus focuses on nurturing grounded leaders based on its “Thinker • Warrior • Farmer” ethos to help strengthen the society by building stronger 5G communities. KK is designed as a low carbon footprint campus, and will feature tropical sustainable architecture, building methods and technologies.
