They make sure that business transactions adhere to tax laws and company policies, overseeing tasks such as payroll, audits and budget controls. This role can be found across various industries, including commerce, the public sector, charities and non-profit organisations among others. Working as an Accounting Officer demands strong organisational skills and meticulous attention to detail.
Tasks and duties
- Preparing and examining financial records, ensuring their accuracy and compliance with financial regulations.
- Analysing financial data and presenting reports to management, detailing a company's financial status and forecasting future trends.
- Inspecting account books for efficiency and use of accepted accounting procedures.
- Developing, maintaining and analysing budgets, preparing periodic reports that compare budgeted costs to actual costs.
- Assessing financial operations and offering recommendations for best financial practices within an organisation.
- Preparing tax returns and ensuring payment is completed accurately and on time.
- Performing checks of an organisation’s financial transactions to prevent and detect fraudulent activities.
How to become an Accounting Officer
An entry-level Accounting Officer needs at least a diploma in Accounting or a related field, but some employers may prefer a Bachelor’s Degree. Consider getting certifications to move up in this career path.
- 1.A diploma or degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business Administration will give you an edge to employers. However, you can supplement with technical certificates like the ACCA Foundations in Accountancy to show your competency.
- 2.Gain at least a year of experience in an Accounting-related role. You can practise via internships, work-study programmes, part-time roles, or on-the-job training.
- 3.Consider enhancing your qualifications with official certifications, such as Certified Accounts Payable Associate (CAPA), Certified Public Accountant (CPA), or Financial Forensic Accounting (FFA).
