What's it like to be an Architectural Designer?
Architectural Designers are responsible for interpreting Architect and client briefs for producing layouts. They use both physical and digital tools to draft 2D and 3D models of buildings and other properties based on design specifications. Architectural Designers ensure budget optimisation, functionality, safety compliance and aesthetic appeal of building designs. Creativity, proficiency in CAD software, and attention to detail are key skills for the role. Architectural Designers work in architecture, design or construction firms, or as freelancers.
Tasks and duties
- Liaising with clients and architects for design layout specifications.
- Drafting building models with CAD and physical tools.
- Creating quotes for budgets and materials.
- Presenting design layouts and recommendations.
- Adhering to regulatory and safety standards for designs.
- Visiting construction sites to oversee the implementation of building layouts.
- Revising layouts as directed.
How to become an Architectural Designer
A bachelor degree is required to work as an Architectural Designer. Although you do not have to be a registered Architect, aspiring Architects typically pursue this role on the path to getting their qualifications. Architectural Designers need strong mathematical and technical skills to excel in the job, as well as the ability to comprehend and execute briefs.

Graduate with a bachelor degree in architecture or a related field.

Complete an internship at a recognised architectural firm.
- 3.
Get an entry-level job such as Architectural Assistant and build your design portfolio.
- 4.
After two years of work experience, take and pass the Professional Practice Examination (PPE) administered by the Singapore Institute of Architects. The examination consists of a written and oral portion.

Meet the qualifications of the Board of Architects in Singapore. Your evaluation will be based on whether you are physically capable of the rigours of the job.
- 6.
Consider completing a master’s degree in architecture.
