What's it like to be an Art Teacher?
An Art Teacher is a practitioner of fine arts and qualified to teach at schools. There are Art Teachers for almost every age range, and they have the artistic ability and communication skills necessary to instruct students in various mediums of art. Art Teachers do not need to be professional Artists in order to be an Art Teacher, but they do need to have artistic skills and ability.
Tasks and duties
- Planning lessons according to a school’s curriculum.
- Instructing students in creating various art forms.
- Preparing art classrooms such as darkrooms and studios with proper setup and equipment.
- Costing and sourcing art supplies.
- Evaluating students’ work and providing feedback.
- Lecturing students about art mediums and art history.
- Reporting student performance to school administration and parents.
How to become an Art Teacher
A bachelor degree and competence in the fine arts is required for this role. Aspiring Art Teachers who want to work in schools will need a teaching licence, although this may not be mandatory for teaching art as an extracurricular or instructing university students and adults.

Pass at least five GCE O-Level subjects, including English as first language and art.

Obtain a diploma in art teaching, graphic design, fine arts, or another related major from a recognised institution.

Complete an internship teaching art in community, educational, or cultural organisations.
- 4.
Take an advanced diploma in elementary or secondary art education if you plan on teaching in a school.
- 5.
Take part-time or seasonal jobs teaching art outside of the school calendar, and maintain a constant art practice.
