What's it like to be a Teacher?
Teachers are tasked with educating students, guiding them in their studies, and ensuring they acquire the knowledge and skills needed at certain stages in life. Teachers can be found at all levels of the education system, such as primary schools, secondary schools and universities. They also work in tutorial or training centres, and private or public educational institutions. Depending on who they’re teaching, a Teacher might also coordinate activities that enhance students’ social and physical development.
Tasks and duties
- Instructing students in certain subjects.
- Creating curricula or teaching plans that cater to different students.
- Presenting lessons in an understandable manner.
- Assigning educational assignments, such as homework and projects.
- Monitoring student learning progress.
- Grading students and providing necessary feedback.
- Attending seminars and conferences to improve teaching methods.
- Collaborating with other teachers to deliver classes and activities.
How to become a Teacher
Teachers in Singapore require certification and tertiary qualifications.

Complete a bachelor degree in education or the subject area you wish to teach.
- 2.
Complete a postgraduate diploma in education (PGDE) if you plan to work in a Ministry of Education institution. Alternatively, complete a masters degree in education or the subject area you wish to teach if you plan to work in a private or international school.

Attain TEFL certification if you plan to teach English as a Second Language (ESL).
- 4.
Gain experience. You could start off as a teacher’s assistant or undertake a placement program in a school.
