What's it like to be a Construction Engineer?
Construction Engineers typically work within the construction industry and manage the design, planning and construction aspects of projects. They usually work in collaboration with architects and project managers to ensure that all construction works are carried out according to design specifications. Common responsibilities include overseeing construction operations onsite, adhering to regulations and safety codes and assessing potential risks. Construction Engineers can work across various settings, including residential, commercial and civil construction projects. Furthermore, they often have a mix of office based and field work entailing frequent site visits.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing construction projects from start to completion and adhering to the design and quality specifications.
- Working closely with architects and other engineers, coordinating tasks aiming for a seamless flow of activities during projects.
- Creating and reviewing project blueprints and designs, assessing feasibility and meeting safety and regulatory guidelines.
- Developing budgets, estimating costs and managing resources to meet these budgets in order to operate within financial constraints.
- Conducting regular on-site inspections to comply with safety standards and project specifications.
- Solving technical problems that emerge during construction, making real-time changes to the project plan if necessary.
- Providing regular reports on the project status, including updates on progress, costs, issues and timelines.
How to become a Construction Engineer
To become a Construction Engineer, you need a degree in Civil or Structural Engineering or the equivalent. It will give you the proper theoretical foundations you need to do well in this role.
- Bachelor's degree in civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent qualifications required.
- Have at least four years of experience in entry-level engineering roles.
- Register with the Professional Engineers Board. You must pass the Fundamentals of Engineer Examination and the Practice of Professional Engineering Examination. Applicants are also required to attend an interview.
- Boost your qualifications by getting relevant certifications from the Building and Construction Authority.
- Studying advanced degrees in related fields, such as Construction Management, may give you more career prospects.
