What's it like to be a Design Engineer?
Design Engineers commonly use computer-aided design (CAD) to design blueprints and 3D models of design solutions. Their design solutions can range from new tools and equipment, to software and infrastructure. Design Engineers use a combination of mathematics, technical knowledge and creativity to make efficient and aesthetic products. They typically work in healthcare, manufacturing, IT, construction, electronics and consumer goods industries.
Tasks and duties
- Creating designs, blueprints and prototypes using CAD.
- Conducting feasibility studies and market research to determine the best designs.
- Interpreting design briefs and participating in product presentations.
- Evaluating design performance data and optimising features.
- Preparing quotes for the cost of materials.
- Liaising with manufacturing teams and other team members to ensure design goals are achieved.
How to become a Design Engineer
You need a bachelor degree and industry experience to become a Design Engineer. A postgraduate degree may be preferred by employers. Aspiring Design Engineers must pass the Professional Engineers Board examination.

Complete a bachelor degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering or a related field.

Gain several years of work experience in engineering. You could start off by undertaking an internship while you study.

Register as a professional engineer with the Singapore Professional Engineers Board. Applicants must show proof of a degree in engineering and work experience. In addition, you’ll need to pass the oral and written examinations in Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FEE) and Practice of Professional Engineering Examination (PPE).

Consider expanding your skills by completing a postgraduate degree in engineering.
