What's it like to be an Early Childhood Teacher?
Early Childhood Teachers (also known as Early Childhood Educators) facilitate classes for children around 2 months to 6 years of age. They help develop childrens’ social, motor and learning skills, providing a strong framework for future education. Early Childhood Teachers work at private preschools, government schools and day care centres.
Tasks and duties
- Creating a safe learning environment for children by adhering to safety protocols.
- Creating quality learning environments for children by designing developmentally appropriate programmes, classroom activities and learning resources.
- Nurturing the growth of literacy, numeracy, motor, social and emotional skills in children.
- Designing developmentally appropriate curricula and preparing materials for classroom activities.
- Observing children to understand their strengths and developmental needs.
- Maintaining communication with parents, colleagues and other relevant stakeholders to ensure continuity in children’s learning, provide quality care to young children and develop positive relationships.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development to stay current with best practices in early childhood education, and staying updated on appropriate education innovations and/or new teaching methods.
How to become an Early Childhood Teacher
A relevant qualification approved by the Early Childhood Development Agency is necessary to secure this role.
Complete a course in early childhood education, which will include a practicum at an ECDA-licensed preschool centre.
Obtain a teacher certification from the Early Childhood Development Agency upon meeting their academic, professional and language standards.
