What's it like to be a Kindergarten Teacher?
A Kindergarten Teacher is a teaching professional that plays a big role in preparing young students to enter the primary school level. They deal with K1 and K2 students aged five to six years olds. They teach general education subjects such as letters and numbers, and may use teaching methods such as singing songs. Additionally, they also teach social, emotional, and personal skills. They are also involved in developing a teaching plan for the whole school term and some administrative work for the school.
Tasks and duties
- Developing a lesson plan for students.
- Assessing students’ learning capacity and recommending different approaches to teaching.
- Preparing students for primary school level education.
- Learning teaching techniques to effectively impart lessons to students.

Kindergarten teaching is regulated by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) of Singapore which is jointly overseen by the Ministry of Education (MoE) and the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF).
How to become a Kindergarten Teacher
To work as a Kindergarten Teacher in Singapore, you will need to meet certain requirements overseen by the Ministry of Education.

Complete a bachelor degree. Generally, a degree in early childhood care and education or general education is favoured by employers.

Pass the teaching certification administered by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA). To be eligible to take this certification, you must meet professional, academic, and language requirements to meet certain respective certification levels. Foreigners who wish to teach kindergarten in Singapore, must pass additional language proficiency tests in English, Chinese, Malay, or Tamil.

Stay up to date in the latest techniques in early child education. Knowledge of current innovations in teaching will give you an edge in getting hired in kindergarten schools.
