What's it like to be an Engineering Technician?
Engineering Technicians help with research and development, planning and design, production and quality control. Like Engineers, they can specialise in different fields such as chemical, civil, electrical, industrial or mechanical engineering. Depending on the job or industry, they can work in production or industrial plants, offices or construction sites. Engineering Technicians typically need strong strong communication, organisational, project management and problem-solving skills.
Tasks and duties
- Providing overall support to an engineering team.
- Controlling heavy machinery or power tools as needed.
- Preparing reports, sketches, field notes and field maps.
- Repairing systems and equipment as needed.
- Taking part in quality assurance processes.
- Performing clerical and administrative tasks such as documentation, travel coordination, vendor management and finance.
How to become an Engineering Technician
Engineering Technicians need to complete a diploma in their preferred field of engineering.

Complete a diploma in your chosen field of engineering. The Institute of Technical Education (ITE) under the Ministry of Education has different options for you to choose from.

Consider upskilling by completing an engineering degree at university. This allows you to build more advanced knowledge that improves your employability.

Take the engineering licensure exam to work as an engineer. After several years of experience, you could move up to a senior role such as Engineering Manager.
