What's it like to be a Systems Engineer?
Systems Engineers apply engineering principles to make sure that the different systems in a process or plant are working together efficiently. They realise, implement or change engineered systems such as those in the technological, chemical and mechanical industries. Systems Engineers may specialise in technological systems, software systems, logistics, product development systems and biosystems. To work with teams across different disciplines, they need effective management, communication and leadership skills.
Tasks and duties
- Identifying and solving issues relating to engineered systems.
- Creating prototypes using software.
- Optimising designs.
- Troubleshooting issues with systems.
- Coordinating with different departments to build or maintain systems.
- Managing projects from conceptualisation to completion.
How to become a Systems Engineer
To become a Systems Engineer, a bachelor degree in engineering is usually required as well as work experience.

Complete a bachelor degree in systems engineering or industrial engineering.

Gain experience. You could undertake an internship with an engineering firm while you study.

Get certified by the Institution of Engineers Singapore as a Chartered Engineer.

You may consider progressing your skills by taking advanced studies or a certification such as the Certification by the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).

With more experience, you can move up to roles such as Chief Systems Engineer, Project Manager or Product Architect.
