What's it like to be a Facilities Engineer?
Facilities Engineers are responsible for the effective operation, maintenance and optimisation of a building's infrastructure, including its heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems, electrical systems and other equipment. They develop preventive maintenance programs, suggest enhancements for energy efficiency and solve ongoing facility operational issues. Usually found in sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, universities and large commercial buildings, these engineers work to ensure a smoothly run facility.
Tasks and duties
- Overseeing the functionality, safety and efficiency of building systems and infrastructure.
- Developing and implementing preventive maintenance programs.
- Inspecting buildings' structures to determine the need for repairs or renovations.
- Coordinating with architects and contractors in the planning and execution of new facility projects.
- Managing and supervising teams of maintenance technicians.
- Ensuring compliance with government regulations and standards.
- Establishing and monitoring budgets for facilities management.
How to become a Facilities Engineer
To be a Facilities Engineer, get an engineering degree, gain experience in maintenance or project management, and develop problem-solving skills.
- 1.Obtain at least a bachelor's degree in Engineering, preferably in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering. Additional courses in project management, sustainability, or energy efficiency can enhance employability.
- 2.Gain 2 – 3 years of relevant work experience for entry-level positions, including maintenance, construction, or project management. Senior or specialised roles may require 5 – 10 years of experience, with leadership experience or industry-specific expertise.
- 3.Consider obtaining professional certifications such as Facilities Management Professional (FMP), Professional Engineer (PE), or Singapore Certified Energy Manager (SCEM) to demonstrate expertise and adherence to industry standards.
- 4.Demonstrate adaptability to incorporate changes in facility infrastructure or systems while maintaining optimal performance, especially in manufacturing environments with evolving technologies and processes.
- 5.Develop expertise in industrial equipment and machinery maintenance and optimisation, including conveyor systems, robotic automation, and production line equipment.
