Mechanical Project Engineers work on the design, planning and development of mechanical systems, equipment and machinery. They are responsible for producing technical plans, managing budgets and ensuring projects adhere to safety regulations. Often, these engineers collaborate with contractors and clients to establish timelines and oversee the implementation of their projects. Mechanical Project Engineers work across various industry sectors, including manufacturing, automotive, power generation and construction.
Tasks and duties
- Designing mechanical systems or modifications in line with project specifications and industry standards.
- Developing project plans that identify key tasks, duration, resources and potential risks.
- Collaborating with multi-disciplinary teams to ensure smooth project delivery.
- Monitoring and controlling project status against schedule and budget.
- Performing technical trouble-shooting to resolve issues that arose during project implementation.
- Ensuring projects comply with relevant regulations, industry standards and health and safety best practices.
- Documenting project activities and preparing comprehensive project reports.
How to become a Mechanical Project Engineer
A diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering or its equivalent is a good start to becoming a Mechanical Project Engineer. You may also need a background in project management.
- 1.Complete a diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering or its equivalent.
- 2.Gain practical knowledge by applying to internships, on-the-job training, and entry-level roles, such as Assistant Engineer.
- 3.If you want to progress to more senior roles, consider registering with the Professional Engineers Board. It requires at least four years of relevant experience. You must also pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FEE) and the Practice of Professional Engineering Examination (PPE).
- 4.Getting project management certifications, such as a Six Sigma Certification or a Project Management Professional (PMP), may give you a professional edge.
