An Information Technology (IT) Business Analyst plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency and productivity of a business by analysing its IT systems and processes. They liaise between IT developers and business stakeholders, ensuring IT systems correctly support business objectives. A major part of their role involves the collection, understanding and transmission of business requirements to IT specialists, often involving project management. Furthermore, they evaluate system functionality against the needs of the organisation, proposing improvements and offering solutions to problems. IT Business Analysts can be found across almost all industries, typically within larger organisations that rely heavily on IT systems for their operations.
Tasks and duties
- Leading discussions with business stakeholders to understand their requirements and expectations.
- Gathering and analysing business processes, procedures and user needs.
- Designing and implementing efficient IT systems to meet business and technology needs.
- Liasing between the IT department and business units for problem resolution and technology advancement.
- Developing and executing test plans to validate system requirements and ensure business needs are met.
- Documenting IT projects, monitor progress and manage project risks.
How to become an IT Business Analyst
To become an IT Business Analyst, start with a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field. Experience can help you polish up your analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or Engineering, Information Systems, Information Technology, or the equivalent.
- Gather three to five years of experience. Start in junior IT positions to understand the ins and outs of IT. Then, develop your leadership, problem-solving, and analytical skills by joining crucial projects, signing up for supervisory roles, shadowing your line manager, or getting a mentor.
- IT requires you to adapt based on the latest technology. But you can also consider further formal education.
