What's it like to be an Interior Designer?
Interior Designers assess interior spaces and modify their elements to align with their client’s vision. They use computer aided design (CAD) to draft and present designs to use as a blueprint for adding furniture, flooring, lighting, and decor. Interior Designers may be freelance, or work for architecture and design firms.
Tasks and duties
- Designing spaces that are functional, aesthetically pleasing and geared toward the well-being of its inhabitants.
- Coordinating with suppliers, construction teams and Architects for the overall design of a space.
- Meeting budget and schedule requirements for design projects.
- Presenting design blueprints and proposals to clients, applying feedback as necessary.
- Overseeing the purchase, ingress and egress of materials for design projects.
How to become an Interior Designer
As technical knowledge is required for the role, aspiring Interior Designers must have formal education. Additional skills and experience may be gained through participating in design projects, internships, workshops and seminars.

Obtain a technical diploma in interior design to learn fundamental skills such as CAD, colour theory, modelling and spatial planning.

Consider graduating with a bachelor degree in interior design.
- 3.
Build a portfolio of internships, volunteer work, and passion projects to develop your style and present your work to prospective clients.
- 4.
Get accredited by the Singapore Interior Design Accreditation Scheme after at least 12 months of experience.
- 5.
Join an interior design firm, or work as a freelance designer.
