What's it like to be a Mechanic?
Also known as Service Technicians, Mechanics investigate problems on motor vehicles and provide solutions. They communicate with vehicle owners to get an understanding of a vehicle’s problem, and they carry out routine maintenance to improve vehicle performance and safety. Mechanics typically need a strong knowledge of vehicles, tools, diagnostic equipment and service types.
Tasks and duties
- Conducting maintenance on various systems and vehicles.
- Liaising with clients to determine automotive requirements and suggestions.
- Preparing cost estimates.
- Recording the progress of completed work.
- Maintaining cleanliness in a workspace and ensuring that all tools are kept in a safe place.
- Performing diagnostic tests to identify issues.
How to become a Mechanic
To become a Mechanic, you usually need a combination of education and training. An apprenticeship can provide hands-on experience for this role.

Complete at least a secondary school certificate.

Complete a vocational program or certification in automotive technology or a related field to learn key skills for the role.

Apply for an apprenticeship. You will be given more specialised training during this time, and most employers and businesses will require you to be an apprentice for two years before you can work independently.
